Wiring a 20-Amp 240-Volt Appliance Receptacle. This outlet is commonly used for a heavy load such as a large air conditioner. The outlet should be wired to a dedicated 20-amp/240-volt circuit breaker in the service panel using 12|2 awg cable.. With this wiring, both the black and white wires are used to carry 120 volts each and the white wire is wrapped with electrical tape to label it hot.

Use the NEMA plug chart below to identify a configuration by pin array or designation. NEMA designations are based on a two part code where the numbers before the dash represent voltage and wires and the numbers after the dash represent amperage. For example, the "5" in the common 5-15 represents 3-Wire 125V and the "15" represents 15 amp.

These wires are then connected to a two-pole breaker at the circuit panel in your breaker box – basically just two 120v single-pole breakers wired together.

Strip 1 ⁄ 2 in (1.3 cm) of insulation off the ends of each wire. Work on 1 wire at a time or else you won’t remove the insulation as well. Grip the last 1 ⁄ 2 inch (1.3 cm) of the wire in the jaws of the wire stripper and squeeze the handles together. Pull the wire stripper toward the end of the wire to cut off the insulation.

It would be against code to wire receptacles in series, and there's no good reason to do it anyway. The total voltage in a series circuit equals the sum of the voltage drops, which means if you have something plugged into each of the receptacles, the voltage of the series outlet at the end would be too low to do anything useful.
