Wiring residential homes with 240 volts is a necessity, for powering some heating and cooling equipment as well as some large appliances. The 220-volt circuits as they were known prior to the 1960s are now commonly known as 240-volt circuits and 110-volt circuits are now 120-volt circuits.

With 220v wiring, both three and four-wire setups are possible. The red and black wires in 220v circuits carry 220 volts across each other but 110v in relation to the neutral, which is the white wire in a four-wire cable, leaving the green or bare copper wire for grounding the circuit.

If you look at a 220V to 110V wiring diagram, you'll note that a 220V circuit has two hot wires. That means a 220V plug has to have an extra hot terminal, which is brass by convention. Also by convention, the hot wires are colored black and red. A 110V outlet (and plug) has only one hot terminal, and the hot wire is always black.

Wire gauge is a measure of wire thickness; the lower the gauge, the thicker the wire. If you're wiring a 220v, 20-amp outlet to run power tools, you can use the same 12-gauge wire you would use for a 110-volt, 20-amp circuit. Remember that the cable must have an extra hot wire.
