You will have a wide variety of telephone jacks to choose from but the wiring for a single line phone service will be standard. Keep in mind that the colors of the telephone wiring in your home will be typically one of two types or insulation colors. Older telephone wiring was a basic Cat-3, 4 conductor or 2-pairs with red, green, black, yellow.

The most common type is the 4-strand (2 twisted pair). This consists of red and green wires, which make a pair, and yellow and black wires, which make the other pair. One telephone line needs only 2 wires. Therefore it follows that a 4-strand wire can carry 2 separate phone lines.

Beyond the demarcation jack, the phone wiring may lead to a junction box that serves as a switchboard for multiple lines running throughout the house. Each line may lead to one or more phone jacks. If there is a problem on one phone and not the others, examine this phone's jack and line back to the junction box.

FYI, if purchase multiwire cable with 4 pair (8 colored wires) for four lines, the wiring convention is the same as above, with LINE 3 using BLUE + WHITE and LINE 4 using ORANGE + BROWN. In older telephone installations, the phone cable typically has four wires inside: red, green, black, and yellow.
