Wiring LEDs Correctly: Series & Parallel Circuits Explained

Lets start with the series part of the circuit. Lets say we want to run a total of 9 Cree XP-L LEDs at 700mA each with a voltage of 12V dc; the forward voltage of each LED at 700mA is 2.98V dc. Rule number 2 from the series circuit bullet points proves that 12V dc isn’t enough voltage to run all 9 LEDs in-series (9 x 2.98= 26.82V dc).

So, a 12V battery wired to four 3V LEDs in series would distribute 3V to each of the LEDs. But that same 12V battery wired to four 3V LEDs in parallel would deliver the full 12V to each LED - enough to burn out the LEDs for sure! Wiring LEDs in parallel allows many LEDs to share just one low voltage power supply.

In our simple LED Circuit consisting of a single LED, we have used a 5mm White LED and a power supply of 12V. As per the datasheet of the 5mm White LED, the Forward Voltage of the LED is 3.6V and the Forward Current of the LED is 30mA. Therefore, V S = 12V, V LED = 3.6V and I LED = 30mA.
