Wiring problems with Generator/voltage regulator | Ford ...

Had generator bench tested again and it works. Replaced voltage regulator and still get this arc. New regulator is identical to old one in looks and both say 12 V N/P to show it goes both ways on voltage. Deb sent me wiring diagram on how to wire it back up. I double checked that I hooked it up according to wiring diagram. I am stumped, any ideas?

I also checked all the wiring from the generator to the regulator, appears ok and resistance check is fine. I also watched the regulator with the engine running. On A & F of the regulator the contacts are always closed. On the B contact it is always open, slight movement to close a times, but no contact made. Idle, fast idle, high rev, same result.

I went to Auto Zone and got another regulator and it was specific on how to wire the regulator, 1) field wire, 2) Gen wire, 3) bat wire, 4) ground wire, then once I hook up the battery, I am to remove the field wire from the regulator and touch the battery wire on the regulator. So at idle, I am at 13.8 volts and with head lights on, 13.5.

You can bypass the voltage regulator and make the generator go to full output. Disconect the wires at the votage regulator and then temporary hook the field wire to the battery wire. Hook the volt meeter to the battery and bring the engine up to about 1500 rpm's. Should put out 30-35 amps and the voltage should be anywhere from 14.5 to 18 volts.
