A Marine stereo doesn't just plug into a wall, like a boom box. Every new stereo comes with what is called a wiring harness like this. This end plugs into the back of the stereo. A home stereo, for example, may often list 6-16 ohms as being ok for use. Also, attempting to wire two 8 ohm speakers in parallel to an 8 ohm stereo would have the same effect.

The most basic way to wire marine speakers to an amplifier is to connect one speaker to each of the available channels. But there are other options to consider. Most external amplifiers can power more than one speaker per channel. For example, a 4 channel amplifier may be able to power up to 8 speakers.
