Ceiling Light Fixture Electrical Wiring and Connections: Depending on the age of the home there may be one or more cables found in the ceiling junction box. These cables are used for distributing power to the light fixture, the wall switch, and may provide power to wall receptacle outlets as well.

Three-wire cable runs from there to the controllers on the wall. The neutral wire from the source is spliced directly to the white wire on the ceiling fixture.

With the power turned off, remove your ceiling rose cover. You won’t be able to tell from the design of the rose – instead, you’ll need to count the cables entering it. If there’s only one cable then you have a junction-box wiring; if there are two or three, then you have a loop-in system.

Remove the old light fixture and then remove the junction box in the ceiling above it. It is often necessary to use a saw to cut the junction from the joist to which it is attached. Take care to avoid damaging wires, which can sometimes have a short span, making it more challenging to install a new housing.

Connect the neutral wire from the light fixture to the neutral white wire(s) in the box. If your fixture is wired with lamp-style cord rather than white (neutral) and black (hot) wires, identify the neutral wire by looking for silver conductors, writing, squared corners, or ribs or indentations on the insulation. The unmarked wire is the hot wire.

There are diagrams for adding lights to a ceiling fixture you already have and for using an existing wall outlet as the source for a new switch and light. Different wiring arrangements are included to allow for either the light or the switch to come first in the circuit.
