Types of Electrical Boxes

The shape of an electrical box can help you identify its purpose. A standard rectangular shape is the most common electrical box. This unit houses a single electrical switch or outlet available in metal and nonmetallic units that protect wiring from the elements with gaskets, sealed seams and watertight covers.

To help you understand which electrical protection goes where, consider what each type of breaker was designed to do and make sure to follow the national electric code. Standard Circuit Breaker Circuit breakers protect home electrical wiring and equipment like furnaces, air conditioners, dryers and stoves.

Calculating Box Sizes. The electrical code limits how many wires you can safely put in an electrical box. To figure the minimum box size required by the National Electrical Code, add: 1 – for each hot and neutral wire entering the box 1 – for all the ground wires combined 1 – for all the cable clamps combined (if any)

According to standards in use since the mid-1900s, a wire color code identifies the purpose of each wire in an electrical circuit. The white wire is always neutral, and when the cable has only two conductors, as most 120-volt cables do, the hot wire is black. The ground wire is usually left bare, but in some cases, the ground wire color is green.

Conduit always terminates at some type of electrical box or at fixed equipment that also serves as a box. Special connectors are used to secure conduit to boxes and to join lengths of conduit together to form long straight runs or bends. The boxes, connectors, and conduit form a wire enclosure system called a raceway.
