Guitar Shop 101: The ABCs of Output Jacks | Premier Guitar

There are many different types of output jacks, including mono, stereo, TRS, barrel, and power types (Photo 1). Ultimately they all have the same job: transfer the signal from your guitar to the instrument cable. Output jacks can eventually wear out, causing the signal to be intermittent—usually at the worst possible time.

An active basses uses a trs (stereo) output jack to act as a 'switch' to apply power to your preamp when you plug a cable in to the bass. You really need a trs jack to do this properly. Otherwise, if you rewire it to work with the ts jack you have, you'll be constantly draining the battery for your preamp!

Installing an Output Jack is an essential skill to have under your belt. Installing it wrong, however, can give you a literal headache. Diagram #13 shows a typical mono jack and how it should be connected. Diagram #14 shows how to wire a stereo output jack to turn on an onboard power source (battery) when a 1/4" mono plug is inserted. This works by using the "ring" connector of the stereo jack to complete the ground side of the active onboard circuit when the plug is inserted.

Firstly, you could decide to run a stereo cable from the guitar with the two signals on the two channels. This would involve a single jack on the guitar – a stereo jack. The problem with this is that active pickups already use a stereo jack as a switch for the battery.

My son was recently given an Applause AE 146 acoustic guitar (by Ovation) with a built-in active preamp that runs on a 9V battery. For some reason, the 1/4" jack is missing and the internal cable to it was cut.
