Heat Sink

Heat sink is a direct practical means of combating the undesirable thermal effects e.g. thermal runaway. It may be noted that the ability of any heat sink to transfer heat to the surrounding depends upon its material, volume, area, shape, contact between case and sink and movement of air around the sink.

Re: Schematic Symbol for a Heat Sink « Reply #6 on: July 31, 2011, 07:04:10 pm » The heatsink should be connected to ground, if the circuit is connected to directly to the mains (i.e. not via an isolated SMPS or transformer) and it's possible the user could come into contact with it.

When the heat sink is added, the case thermal resistance (θCA) is nearly doubled because its lower surface area is lost to the heat sink. If the heat sink area is very large then very little heat will be dissipated through the case and θCA can be ignored. Wires are attached to the hot side of the module, which is the module face that is in contact with the heat sink. For modules having insulated wire leads, when the red and black leads are connected to the respective positive and negative terminals of a DC power supply, heat will be pumped from the module’s cold side, through the module, and into the heat sink.

Circuit Diagram The cooling fan you see in the below picture (reference image) has the thermistor at the end of a twin-wire cable tied to the cooling fan frame. When the cooling fan is installed on the rest of the heat sink this thermistor should mounted in between two of the copper fins, or between the copper fin and the aluminum frame of the heat sink assembly as necessitated.
