Thermostats act as the control hub of your heating and cooling system, giving you access and easy control from one central location. With today’s programmable thermostats and Wi-Fi thermostats, wiring your own system has never been easier.However, it still requires a thorough setup. This guide will explain how to wire a thermostat in your home.

Heck, now I’m not calling anyone a dummy! Even the most seasoned people who enjoy DIY may come across problems with wiring a thermostat. The main trouble is dealing with those different colored wires, knowing which one does what and if that wasn’t enough, you also have numbers and letters to deal with.

The thermostat is the control device that provides a simple user interface with the internal workings of your homes climate control system. By the use of an adjustable set-point, the job of the thermostat is to turn on either the heating or cooling system to maintain the desired room temperature in the home, and to turn off the system when the desired temperature is achieved.

Although your connections may look a bit different on the thermostat, you just need basic wiring ideas and how home thermostats work. A good starting point would be to connect the RED 24 Vac transformer cable to the RC ad RH/4 terminal. In some thermostats, there’s a dedicated R terminal that jumpers to RH/4 and RC terminals internally.

How to wire a thermostat. To wire a thermostat, you must first be aware of the type of system that you have in your home. A large majority of homes today have an HVAC system containing a Furnace (Oil, Gas or Electric) and An A/C Unit. The thermostat wiring on these systems can have very similar wiring properties.
