Wire comes in many sizes in solid and stranded varieties. Stranded wire is really a bundle of smaller diameter wires wound together. Wire size is indicated by a number – the larger the number, the smaller the wire. Most house wiring in No. 12, solid wire. For your layout, we recommend a No. 16 stranded bus wire with No. 18 feeders.

Lionel uses red and black (red always for the center rail, black for the two outer rails) as a standard in its instructions and most 3-Rail O Gauge layouts are probably wired this way. If you are wiring with a common rail for your blocks, then keeping the common rail the same color all the time while changing the color for the other rail in each block is also an option.

DCC model railroad wiring is considerably less labor-intensive with this method of train control since all tracks can be wired with feeders going into the same bus lines running under your layout, with the common, or negative, rail connecting to the common bus wire, and the positive rail connecting to the positive bus wire.
