I was asked to fix a magnavox micromatic model W801-01 00 REF NO6912. The record player cabinet used to run fine, then somebody mangled the turntable during a rental. The alignment was so bad on the auto drop as to dislocate the gear and lock up.

However I install a basic lamp cord 110 volts to the black short prong of the plug and the red wire to the long prong of the plug, and it does work. The yellow wire I left undone, with insulation tape to avoid electrical shock or short that may cause a fire or blow a breaker. I hooked the turntable up via a small Behringer amp.

A mismatch of the litz wire capacitance with the pre-amp input – if you have another pre amp or can get hold of one it is worth checking this. The cartridge tags may be on the wrong pins of the Cartridge – check the colours or manufacturers pin diagram. The tightness of the clip fit on the pins may need improving.

Next to that plug, on the same side of the unit, is another plug marked “PWR IN”, and the cable attached there connects to a one-post box plugged into the electrical outlet. Directly across from the first post, on the opposite side of the unit, is a plug marked “RF TV 5-1000 MHz”, and the cable attached there runs into the DVR cable box unit.

First things first – the simple setup: If you’re hooking your vintage turntable to a stereo receiver or amplifier that has jacks on the back marked “PHONO,” it’s easy: Plug the matching cables coming from your turntable in the phono jacks. Most likely (but not always) there’s also a skinny single wire coming from the turntable. This is called the ground wire.

How do you wire a turntable headshell? This particular headshell is a standard SME type with a H-4 bayonet mount. In this example, I am using the Numark HS-1 headshell with the Altai HL-HM160 cartridge to show it is wired. This cartridge, also known as Groovetool, uses the widely accepted pinout standard.

For sale is an 81-01-00 power amp with its speaker wiring and selector switch, removed from a 1960 vintage Magnavox "Imperial" console stereo (model 2-ST220 F). From my research, and reviewing the schematic of a 182BA amp, this appears to be almost identical save that of the molex speaker switch connector.

You may also need audio cables with plugs to fit the spacing of the twin RCA phono jacks on vintage stereo models.
