The RJ-45 is a single-line jack for digital transmission over ordinary phone wire, either untwisted or twisted. The interface has eight pins or positions. For connecting a modem, printer, or a data PABX at a data rate up to 19.2Kbps, you can use untwisted wire.

The centre 2 pins of the RJ plug/socket are used for the telephone line terminations. In the case of a RJ45 (8 Position) socket and a single phone line, the two wires are still connected to the middle two Positions, but these Positions are numbered 4 and 5. Positions 1, 2, 3 and 6, 7, 8 are empty. In the case of a RJ45 socket and two phone lines, or a single phone line with ‘fancy features’, two pairs of wires are used.

The diagrams above show how to do this using our ADSL1 model, however the procedure is similar for our other models as well. If you have more than 3-4 devices connected to your phone line (fax machines, telephones, back-to-base alarms etc), you should have a central filter (such as our ADSL6) installed by a licensed cabler.

The phone line should come in from the street on white and blue. The phone should be wired so that the middle 2 contacts on the plug are the active ones. Doesn't matter if it's RJ11, 12 or 45, it will always be the 2 contacts in the middle. Polarity doesn't matter. Murray

The above wiring diagram is of a typical legacy (i.e. obsolescent) PSTN telephone service with parallelled extensions in a customer's premises. This is the "bus-wired" or "daisy-chain" method. The term TO means the same as telephone socket in this context. In the telephone cable itself, the "A" wire (+ve) is white and the "B" (-ve) is blue.
