The important components of typical home electrical wiring including code information and optional circuit considerations are explained as we look at each area of the home as it is being wired. The home electrical wiring diagrams start from this main plan of an actual home which was recently wired and is in the final stages.

As the name implies, Distribution Box simply distributes the electric supply to sections of the house. These sections contain light circuits [Light Switches + Light Bulbs], fan circuits [Fan Regulator + Fan] and plug socket circuits. The 120-volt, 20-amp circuit supplies a receptacle for the washing machine. It is typically wired with 12-gauge, two-wire cable containing a hot wire, a neutral wire, and a ground wire. The receptacle is a 20-amp GFCI receptacle. What's special about this circuit is that it is a designated circuit, not to be confused with a dedicated circuit.

A typical set of house plans shows the electrical symbols that have been located on the floor plan but do not provide any wiring details. It is up to the electrician to examine the total electrical requirements of the home especially where specific devices are to be located in each area and then decide how to plan the circuits.

If a 14-gauge wire is connected to a 20-amp circuit breaker or fuse, replace the breaker or fuse with one that is 15 amps to prevent the wire from overheating. In most cases, a 20-amp fuse or breaker should connect to a 12-gauge wire; a 30-amp fuse or breaker should connect to a 10-gauge wire.
