The wiring diagram for a master LJU socket is shown here. Note that the pictorial view shown above only serves to indicate the two differing types of sockets and wiring connections. Contrary to how it might seem, C1 is connected to terminals 2 & 3, not 1 & 4.

House telephone wiring uses cable containing six 0.5mm diameter solid conductors. It is important that this size of wire is used or a good electrical connection cannot be guaranteed and there could be problems in the future with the system. Never use stranded wire, mains cable or bell wire.

Note that with the two rightmost 2 wire examples in the diagram going from RJ11 to BT will involve the colour code going "wrong" at one end or the other unless a junction box or joint is used. If the lead has a BT adapter at one end the colour swap is usually made there, USR tended to swap it in the RJ11 plug, others do their own thing.

The ring wire or bell wire You have most probably heard of the "ring wire" or "bell wire" & why it is bad news for ADSL & vDSL broadband. Removing the bell wire (pin 3 on the IDC block of the MASTER socket, eg, NTE5) can certainly improve ADSL/vDSL performance if you have internal extension wiring (if you don't have any extension wiring then you shouldn't have a bell wire!).

Wiring a jack is not difficult and it is totally fine to add a new jack or internet phone jack to your system. You should disconnect the main phone line from the source before continuing wiring a phone jack. The phone line usually comes in by your electrical panel.
