The 1990 Volvo 240 is a rear-wheel-drive, front-engine car available as both a sedan and station wagon. Replacing the starter on these cars is a good home project. It will save you a costly repair bill and with the cavernous engine compartment and the small engines in the cars, there is plenty of room to remove and install the starter from above, through the engine compartment.

I've thought surely the starter was going bad, but my question is, could a bad starter cause the gauges to go goofy like that. Researching the gauge problem, I've found info to make me suspect the wiring harness from switch to firewall, the ignition switch itself, the engine wiring harness, the battery, poor grounds, on and on (but not the starter).

I have a 90 Volvo 240 and the braided starter/solenoid ground wire disintegrated after only 308,000 miles. I have the small profile starter and the braided ground wire turned to dust. It was only about 2-3 inches long from a connector on the solenoid to what appears to have been some sort of solder or hot metallic connection on the rear of the starter body.
