There are two paths to power the wiper motor, normal wiping done with the switch in Low or High, and the parking sweep, used when the switch is in Interval or Off. Using the early, non-intermittent (no relay) wiring diagram, the two paths can be followed. Parking cam used in the Electrolux wiper motor.

Volvo added this relay to the 240 to take the heavy current load away from the dash headlight switch, so the heat melt damage typically found in early headlight switches would stop happening. It solved that problem, but then heat melt damage would sometimes begin to occur in the relay plug.

The Wiper Switch on my 1992 Volvo 240 has started going haywire - running in the wrong speeds and not shutting off unless I play a lot with the shift-adjuster and maneuver it into an exact position.
