In household wiring, several appliances run on 240V power feeds from the breaker box. This voltage is double that of standard household wiring, and thus requires a special double-pole breaker. This breaker looks like two standard breakers stacked on top of each other, and therefore requires that two breaker positions be open.

Wiring a 120-volt circuit off of a 240-volt circuit can be useful where there is primarily 240 volts available. This could be the case at a water well or a workshop. A 240-volt circuit is comprised of two hot wires, a common neutral wire, and a ground wire.

There are various 240-volt receptacles, each made for specific amperages and appliances, so be sure to buy the right one for your application. Each appliance needs a separate double-pole breaker. Some older receptacles use only three wires; codes now call for four wires—black and red hot wires, a white neutral wire, and a ground wire.

In that case, the black wire is connected to one pole of the two-pole 240V breaker in the panel. The white wire is redesignated as an ungrounded conductor by using black or red (or any color except gray or green) electrical tape or permanent marker and connected to the other pole of the breaker, and the bare ground wire is connected to the ground busbar.

Use 12-gauge wire for 20 amp circuits, 10 gauge for 30 amp, 8 gauge for 40 amp and 6 gauge for 50 amp. If the appliance uses a combination of 120 and 240 volts, buy three-wire cable. If it only uses 240 volts, buy two-wire cable. Both types have an extra, bare wire for ground.

The problem with doing this is you may have, say, a 30 amp double pole breaker on your 240V line which may be 10g wire, and the you come off it on one phase with a 120V circuit with 14g wire, the 30 amp breaker is to high for 14g wire, which then is not protected from melting.
