How to Wire an Electric Meter

This is the portion of the meter that feeds the main service panel or the electrical disconnect. As with the line connection, the load connection has the two hot feeds as well as a center neutral connection. There is also a #6-gauge ground wire that links the neutral/ground connection on the meter to the grounding rod.

Wiring a meter base is the responsibility of a homeowner. Some utility companies may supply the meter base and some will not. In most cases, only the service drop and meter are installed by the utility company. The meter socket, wiring and all the fittings are the responsibility of the owner as well.

Connect a No. 6 black wire to each of the lugs at the top of the meter base. Run these two wires up through the conduit and out the weatherhead. Most power companies require that 30 inches of each wire be left hanging out of the weatherhead; this gives them enough length for connecting to their service line.
