Eight Pin Plug for DCC (NEM 652 / NMRA 8 Pin)

Summary: The NEM 652 or 8 Pin DCC Plug is one of the standard plugs used for Locomotive Interfaces.The plug is on the end of a loose wiring harness coming from the decoder and mates with a fixed female socket mounted on the locomotive chassis. The 8 pin version is known as the medium size and is the most common standard DCC connector used in HO and OO locomotives.

Based on their decoder and 8-pin plug, I a m pretty sure I can ID the wires by color. What I want to clarify is the 4 and 2 wire harness wiring as the color has mostly been obliterated by paint. Is the 2 wire the track voltage from the drivers coming into the decoder? And the 4 wire would be the decoder output back to the motor and front light?

The diagrams usually show a decoder lightboard or one with eight pin socket. I have been following the Bachmann website diagrams and forums since 2007 and have seen the differences. Also, be aware, Bachmann does not use NMRA wire colors. Just follow NMRA wiring plans. The decoders have instructions.

The tender appears to be the same one that Bachmann used on their DCC-Sound 2-8-0 (2018). A Soundtraxx "Economi" DCC-Sound decoder comes plugged into a 9-pin connector on the tender PC board. The wiring to/from the locomotive is attached to a harness that plugs into the main PC board. There is no backup light.
