Your local phone company will come and do your wiring for you, but it will cost you. Wiring a jack is not difficult and it is totally fine to add a new jack or internet phone jack to your system. You should disconnect the main phone line from the source before continuing wiring a phone jack. The phone line usually comes in by your electrical panel.

In older telephone installations, the phone cable typically has four wires inside: red, green, black, and yellow. If you're extending a line to a room or other part of the house, you can use this type of cable, or you can use newer Category 3 or 5 (Cat-3 or Cat-5) data cable, which also has multiple wires but with a different color scheme.

In years gone past, it was the responsibility of the phone company not only to bring phone service to your house but to do the phone wiring within your house as well. This is no longer the case. When you order phone service to your house, the local phone company installs a network interface device , a sturdy grey plastic box usually mounted either in your basement or on an outside wall.

Attach telephone wire to the new jack. After you’ve run the wire from the old jack to the new jack, trim the excess wire so that you have a manageable coil. Strip the insulation from the tips of the four wires. Loosen the screws on the back of the new jack, and affix the red, green, yellow, and black wires in their correct color-coded places.

At this point, you need to establish a standard way of wiring the phone jack. It is a completely arbitrary choice. This must be done in the same order on every connection (see above.)

Place your landline phone's receiver near the telephone jack, then plug the free end of the wire into the "Line 1" port on the back of the receiver. Unless otherwise specified by your phone's manufacturer, avoid using the "Line 2" or other ports on the back of the receiver.
