The resulting tone increases a Telecaster’s versatility, so it wasn’t long before someone came up with a nice solution: the 4-way switch. Simply replace the standard 3-way switch with a special 4-way switch and follow the Fender wiring diagram in Fig. 1.The mod is invisible from the outside, and it provides this switching matrix:

With the appropriate wiring, any single switch that’s flipped should create the light to continue or off. The 3-way switches must forever at the start and at the close of the circuit. As can be found in the diagrams below, there’s almost always a 3-way switch at the beginning and end of the circuit, with 1 or more 4-ways between.

I would like to wire my new telecaster pups (both single coil) to have a 4th position, both pickups in series. I would like to use a toggle switch dedicated to the series position only and leave the 3 way switch alone. FWIW, there's no standard 'in series' on a tele. A normal tele goes like this. 1. neck 2. neck/bridge (parallel) 3. Bridge With a 4 way, that's usually where people get the 'series' position. Which will be louder, and fatter than in parallel. It wires the two coils, just like a humbucker traditionally has two coils wired.

the tele wiring i am most tempted to try is the one where you have master volume knob closest to the pickup (for easier swells), then a blender pot on the middle knob to merge the pickups and then two values of resistor (say, 250k and 100k) wired to the 3-way switch for the tone control options … i think this would provide a lot of variety ...

I have JBE Danny Gattons, which I believe have a hot, cold and separate ground wire, so should work OK. But I can’t decide whether to go for a 4-way switch or a push/pull tone pot switch. I guess the push/pull will just bypass the 3-way and output the pickups in series, and when the switch isn’t engaged, the 3-way will just operate as normal.
