Tow dollies must adhere to all trailer laws regarding brakes and lighting. A basic four-way electrical system providing tail, signal and marker lights must be visible at the rear of the vehicle. Because of the design of the tow dolly, you typically use magnetically fastened rear lights to meet this requirement.

Let’s see what types of connectors the trailer light wiring industry uses today. While the basic configuration is a 4-way flat connector that features one female and three male ends, you may come across connectors with up to seven pins for additional functions that require wiring, including electrically actuated brakes, power source for a winch, etc.

A tow dolly connects to your towing vehicle in exactly the same manner as trailers of any kind; they require a ball hitch, and a trailer lighting receptacle. Not all trailer lighting receptacles are the same, so be mindful beforehand to match up what you see on the trailer with what you have on the back of your car or truck.
