The voltage regulator (which controls how much voltage is being produced by the alternator and operates the charge lamp on the dashboard) on some vehicles is separate to the alternator. If the voltage is rising to within specifications as previously mentioned, the wiring to the lamp may be being earthed somewhere along it`s run to the alternator/regulator.

Back to voltage regulator...after much research of schematics, wiring diagrams, and the internals of the VR, I believe the wires out of the VR were placed in the incorrect pin location. Evidence: when I tested the pin locations IG N F E L B for ohms per Hanes, it only passed two of the five.

These alternators must have a black female plug on the back of the alternator and the proper matching wiring harness. 79 to 80 4x4's, and 79 to 83 2wd's had a 40 amp alternator and a green female plug with an external mechanical voltage regulator.
